Project Brief

The vision for Phinda Homestead was to create a luxury, contemporary living space that dissolves the boundary between the interior and the wilderness. Mansonia was tasked with executing the extensive timber work, requiring large-scale solutions for expansive decking, textured wall cladding, and complex, multi-track sliding door systems.

Our Solution

• Expansive Hardwood Decking & Structural Posts Installation of vast, durable hardwood decking across the main open and covered living areas, forming the primary floor surface. This was supported by custom-cut rustic timber columns that integrate seamlessly with the natural environment.
• Feature Timber Wall Cladding We designed and installed dramatic exterior and interior feature walls using a mix of horizontal, richly-toned timber planks. This cladding created striking, textured facades that provide architectural interest and connect the structure to the landscape.
• Large-Scale Multi-Track Glazing Systems Manufacture and fitment of multi-panel, floor-to-ceiling hardwood sliding door and window systems. These robust units were custom-made to handle the large spans required for maximum natural light and a seamless flow between spaces.
• Custom Vertical Screening & Battens Implementation of detailed vertical timber battens, both within the door frames and as external screening, which introduces architectural rhythm, controls light, and provides necessary privacy without compromising views.
• Organic Ceiling & Eaves Detailing Execution of the complex overhead joinery, including exposed timber ceiling structures, rafters, and eaves made from rustic materials, reinforcing the lodge’s commitment to natural, organic construction.

The blend of refined, large-format sliding systems with the raw, textural appeal of the timber cladding and decking results in a uniquely sophisticated and immersive environment that is perfectly attuned to its safari setting.
